Everett, my first born, is an early riser and when it's my turn to get up with him before dawn we hike to a nearby summit and watch the sunrise together. We often spot deer along the trail and occasionally a coyote or bobcat but we can always rely on sighting a disturbing amount of garbage. Broken glass, beer cans, bottle caps, plastic bags and food wrappers strewn about - right at a breathtaking overlook where you can see all the way from downtown LA to the Santa Monica Pier. It's unbelievably tacky.
This morning after Everett pointed out a discarded lighter and said asked why anyone would have a "fire starter" up here I decided that enough is enough. I can't go on ignoring this rubbish so I asked Everett if he would join me on a mission to clean up the overlook and he said yes! We've been spreading the word in the community and hopefully this blog will increase awareness of this problem in our neighborhood, change people's behaviors, and help to keep our little piece of nearby nature serene.
I'm very excited for this new project and its hard for me to decide what I like most about it: cleaning up the neighborhood or partnering up with Everett James.
Oh and in case you were wondering, yes there is already a rubbish bin up there. It's covered in graffiti and typically empty. I will keep you posted on our progress!
